Coffee has established itself as a ubiquitous aspect of our daily routine, with the world seemingly revolving around the deep, decadent liquid. For many individuals, their day does not commence until they have indulged in that initial invigorating cup of coffee.
It is fascinating to note that there are more than 120 varieties of coffee plants, each yielding a distinct type of coffee bean. However, the vast majority of the coffee we consume originates from just two varieties: Robusta (also referred to as Coffea Robusta or Coffea Canephora) or Arabica (Coffea Arabica), or a combination of the two. These two variants are distinguished by their taste, growing conditions, and price.
Arabica coffee beans
Arabica coffee beans have a lineage dating back to 1,000 BC. Renowned for their lively and intricate flavors, coffee aficionados cherish Arabica beans due to their tendency to offer a sweeter, milder taste with notes of fruit, flowers, chocolate, and nuts, albeit with higher acidity levels.
Robusta coffee beans
Robusta coffee is commonly cultivated in African, Vietnamese, and Indonesian regions. Compared to Arabica, Robusta has lower acidity levels, which generally results in a less sweet taste. Due to its lower acidity and more profound, stronger flavor compounds, Robusta can sometimes feature notes of wood or burnt rubber. It's a preferred option for espresso preparations because of the rich flavor and creamy layer of crema it produces.
